Narges Mohammadi, a prominent human rights activist in Iran, has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous fight against the oppression of women in the country. The head of the Nobel committee described her as a "freedom fighter." Despite being imprisoned since 2010, Mohammadi has managed to shed light on human rights abuses even from inside jail. She holds the position of vice-president at the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran, an organization established by Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi. Mohammadi's husband, a political activist, resides in exile with their two children. Throughout her activism, Mohammadi has faced numerous arrests and convictions, resulting in a staggering 31-year prison sentence. Her current incarceration is due to charges of "spreading propaganda." In a letter from Evin Prison in Tehran last year, Mohammadi detailed the sexual and physical abuse faced by women detained during the 2022 anti-government protests, which were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old who was arrested for violating strict dress codes. The Nobel committee recognized Mohammadi for her unwavering dedication to fighting against systemic discrimination and oppression faced by women. This prestigious award brings international recognition to Mohammadi, a recognition that may not be well-received by the Iranian authorities.
