In response to recent attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups, the US has conducted air strikes on two weapons and ammunition storage facilities in eastern Syria that are used by Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that these strikes were separate from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The strikes occurred near Abu Kamal, a town on the border with Iraq. It is currently unclear if there were any casualties from the attacks. These strikes were carried out as a response to a series of unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in the region by Iranian-backed groups since October 17. The US has warned Iran against targeting US personnel in the Middle East, and if these attacks continue, further measures will be taken to protect US forces.
