The United States is offering a reward of $5 million for any information that could lead to the capture of those responsible for the assassination of an Ecuadorian presidential candidate. Fernando Villavicencio, who campaigned against corruption, was shot and killed during a rally in August. The US has also offered a reward of $1 million for any leads on the leaders of the criminal gang behind the assassination. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US will continue to support Ecuador and work to bring individuals who undermine democracy through violent crime to justice. The FBI is assisting in the investigation, and Blinken believes that this reward demonstrates the United States' commitment to fighting organized crime. Villavicencio's campaign against corruption and criminal gangs focused on exposing links between organized crime and government officials in Ecuador. He criticized the lenient approach towards these gangs and promised a crackdown if he were elected. This assassination, which occurred in the capital at a public event, is the most audacious attack thus far and reveals the power these gangs hold in Ecuador. Ecuador has historically been considered a safe and stable country in Latin America. However, crime rates have risen in recent years due to the presence of Colombian and Mexican drug cartels, which have infiltrated local criminal organizations. Currently, the police have apprehended six Colombian nationals in connection with Villavicencio's murder but are still searching for additional suspects. This is not the first time the United States has offered rewards for information on crimes committed in other countries. Previously, the US offered a reward of $5 million to help capture the deputy leader of al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based militant group, and also offered the same amount for information leading to the arrest of top members of the Irish Kinahan organized crime group.
