Astrobotic, the company behind a US lunar lander mission, has revealed that a fuel leak has made a soft landing on the Moon impossible. The Pittsburgh-based firm said that although there was enough propellant to operate the Peregrine lander as a spacecraft, it would run out of fuel in approximately 40 hours. The 1.2-tonne lander was launched from Cape Canaveral on Monday with the aim of reaching the Moon in late February. Astrobotic announced the news through a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, where it also mentioned that the team is working to find ways to extend Peregrine's operational life. More details are expected to be published as the story develops. To get the latest updates, users can follow @BBCBreaking on Twitter or use the BBC News App on their smartphone or tablet.
