American actress Piper Laurie, known for her memorable performances in The Hustler and Carrie films, has sadly passed away at the age of 91, according to her manager Marion Rosenberg. Laurie, a three-time Oscar nominee, died in her Los Angeles home. Rosenberg described her as not only a superb talent but also a wonderful human being. Laurie's accomplishments extended beyond acting. She took a hiatus from her acting career for 15 years to actively participate in the civil rights movement. Despite this break, Laurie made a remarkable comeback and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the movie Carrie. Born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, Michigan, Laurie's parents had Russian and Polish heritage. At the age of 17, she signed on with Universal Studios, where she received a contract and the stage name Piper Laurie. However, Laurie grew disillusioned with the industry and the repetitive roles she was cast in, leading her to break her Hollywood contract and move to New York in pursuit of different opportunities. During her hiatus, Laurie wholeheartedly devoted herself to civil rights activism and opposing the Vietnam War. She also married film critic Joe Morgenstern and became a mother to a daughter. In addition to her film career, Laurie made appearances in various television shows such as Matlock, Murder She Wrote, and notably portrayed George Clooney's character's mother on ER.
