Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for increased defenses along the front lines after visiting commanders in the south and east. He emphasized the need to quickly construct structures in areas where reinforcement is needed. Russian forces are currently attempting to encircle the town of Avdiivka in the east and targeting the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine's air force has reported shooting down several Russian drones and a cruise missile. President Zelensky has declared that "winter as a whole is a new phase of war" as temperatures drop below freezing and Ukraine experiences snowfall. He has promised to pay close attention to eastern towns under fire, fortify defensive lines, and strengthen the region surrounding Kyiv. These efforts indicate concerns of an escalating conflict, despite ongoing fierce fighting. The Ukrainian counter-offensive since the summer has been perceived as unsuccessful in achieving desired gains. The morale of frontline soldiers on both sides will rely on their preparedness for the harsh winter conditions. The military has successfully defended against multiple attacks near Avdiivka and villages around Bakhmut. Avdiivka, an industrial hub, has been nearly encircled by Russian forces who now control surrounding areas. Facing continuous difficulties, Ukrainian officials indicate that Russian forces are attempting to capture a nearby coke plant. However, there are doubts about Russia's capability to achieve this. In the southeast, Russian forces are trying to reclaim areas lost during Ukraine's counter-offensive. President Zelensky expressed dissatisfaction with the extent of casualties and the unfulfilled delivery of requested weapons. Ukrainian forces recently recaptured the village of Krynky and have faced relentless attacks from Russia since. Russia's defense ministry reported repelling a Ukrainian naval attack on occupied Crimea via the Black Sea. At the same time, a state of emergency was declared in parts of Crimea following a deadly storm.
