In the eastern Ukrainian town of Volnovakha, nine people, including two young children, were found shot dead in their home. Ukrainian authorities believe that Russian soldiers killed the entire Kapkanets family on October 27 because they refused to give up their house to them. Russian investigators have announced that two male suspects, who are said to be Russian soldiers from the Far East, have been detained. Both Ukraine and Russia have initiated separate investigations into the attack. Disturbing photographs circulating on social media show blood-stained and bullet-riddled bodies lying in beds, with some still in an embrace. Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets stated on Monday that Russian involvement was evident in the Volnovakha killings, claiming that "Russians' bloodied hands were involved." According to preliminary information shared on Telegram, Lubinets stated, "The occupiers murdered the entire Kapkanets family, who were celebrating a birthday and had refused to turn over their own house to occupiers from Chechnya." The Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk prosecutor's office, based on initial reports, stated that the attackers, disguising themselves in army uniforms, murdered the family after their refusal to vacate the residence. Among the victims were two children, born in 2014 and 2018, as confirmed by the prosecutor's office. The Russian Investigations Committee labeled the arrested individuals as Russian soldiers from the Far East, who had signed contracts with the Russian military. In their statement, the committee implied that a domestic dispute served as a motive for the crime. Various Russian news channels and neighbors of the victims attributed the killings to the Russian military. However, the claims have not been independently verified. Volnovakha was seized by Russian forces shortly after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, resulting in significant destruction throughout the town. These killings in Volnovakha occur amidst ongoing intense clashes in Ukraine's eastern and southern regions. Kyiv launched a counter-offensive in June to divide the occupying Russian troops in the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and hinder their resupply. However, the Ukrainian advance has faced challenges, as the Russians have had time to fortify their defensive positions. In recent weeks, Moscow has launched attacks near the crucial cities of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region and Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region. Ukrainian military officials claim that all of Moscow's attacks thus far have been unsuccessful, resulting in significant Russian casualties near Avdiivka, a main entry point to the Russian-held regional capital of Donetsk. Nevertheless, the veracity of these claims has yet to be independently verified.
