According to the White House, Russia has been executing soldiers who attempt to retreat from an intense offensive in eastern Ukraine. The US claims that some of the casualties suffered by Russian troops near Avdiivka were a result of orders from their own leaders. The battle between Russian and Ukrainian troops for control of the frontline town has been ongoing since mid-October, and Russia is believed to have sustained significant losses during this time. Ukrainian estimates suggest that there have been around 5,000 Russian casualties in Avdiivka, while the US reports that Russia has lost at least 125 armored vehicles and a battalion's worth of equipment. Ukrainian forces have stated that Russian troops are refusing to attack their positions near Avdiivka due to heavy losses, with reports of mutinies in some units. The Russian military has been criticized for its lack of proper training, equipment, leadership, and support, leading to poor morale among its soldiers. The capture of Avdiivka would allow the Russian troops to push the front line back and make it more difficult for Ukrainian forces to make further advances into the Donetsk region. As a result, the town has been mostly abandoned by its 30,000 residents as it continues to be targeted by Russian forces. In response to the situation, the US has announced a new $150 million military assistance package for Ukraine, including artillery, small-arms ammunition, and anti-tank weapons. However, the future of aid to Ukraine is uncertain following the election of Republican Mike Johnson as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, as Johnson has been against further US aid to Ukraine. Despite this, the US remains the largest military donor to Ukraine, having already provided over $46 billion in military assistance and additional financial and humanitarian aid.
