On Friday, Ukraine launched a missile strike on the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea fleet in Crimea, coinciding with a meeting of naval officials. The Ukrainian military claimed that the attack resulted in deaths and injuries, but did not provide further details. Russia confirmed that one serviceman went missing after the strike. The Black Sea fleet, based in Sevastopol, is considered to be Russia's most formidable naval force. A Ukrainian military source informed the BBC that the attack was carried out using Storm Shadow missiles supplied by Britain and France. The Ukrainian military stated that the strike resulted in numerous casualties among the fleet's top leaders and occupiers. Kyiv's intelligence chief stated that two Russian commanders were severely wounded in the attack. The BBC cannot independently verify the claims made by either side regarding the battlefield. On Saturday, the Sevastopol area faced another attack, as debris from a missile shot down by air defences fell near a pier. The city's governor also addressed concerns about the accessibility and condition of bomb shelters in the area. The attacks on Crimea hold significant strategic and symbolic importance, as the Black Sea fleet not only serves as a launching pad for attacks on Ukraine but also symbolizes Russia's long-standing military presence in the region. The fleet was present in Crimea even before Russia unlawfully annexed the peninsula in 2014.
