The UK has been hit by freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, causing travel disruption and chaos. Parts of the country have experienced temperatures below freezing, with 15cm of snow accumulating in some areas. Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued for various regions, including the north west of England, the Midlands, the south, and parts of Wales and Scotland. Drivers in Cumbria have reported being stuck in traffic for up to 19 hours without access to food or water. The situation has prompted a "major incident" declaration in Cumbria, with authorities urging people to avoid unnecessary travel. Some drivers have spent the night in temporary accommodation or their vehicles. Emergency services have struggled to deliver much-needed supplies to stranded vehicles. The adverse weather conditions have also affected other parts of Europe, with train and flight cancellations reported in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
