Two men have been sentenced to jail for the beating death of a bus driver in France. Wyssem Manai and Maxime Guyennon attacked Philippe Monguillot after he asked them to leave the bus for not wearing face masks properly during the pandemic. The incident occurred in the city of Bayonne in 2020, and Monguillot suffered serious head injuries which ultimately led to his death. Manai and Guyennon were convicted of intentional violence resulting in death without intent to kill and have been sentenced to 15 and 13 years in prison respectively. The attack took place after France's first Covid lockdown when masks were mandatory on public transport. Monguillot asked a small group of men on his bus to show their tickets and adjust their improperly worn face masks, which led to the confrontation and subsequent assault. The 59-year-old victim died after spending five days in the hospital. The widow of the victim expressed anger that the men did not receive the maximum penalty of 30 years imprisonment. The incident caused shock across France, prompting a protest march led by Monguillot's widow.
