Trinidad and Tobago is considering declaring a national emergency after a large oil spill occurred from a ship that ran aground and overturned. The spill has affected around 15km of Tobago's south-western coast, including some of the island's beautiful beaches. The government has enlisted the help of 1,000 volunteers to assist in the cleanup efforts, with divers working to isolate the leak from the abandoned vessel. Farley Augustine, the chief secretary of Tobago, stated that the accident may be designated as a Level 3 disaster, the highest level. Currently, the spill is categorized as Level 2, indicating that the country can manage the situation on its own. However, a national emergency is declared when local resources are overwhelmed, and international support is required. The ship, known as The Gulfstream, capsized last Wednesday near the Cove Eco-Industrial Estate, and no emergency calls were made. The incident occurred just days before the country's carnival celebrations, which play a significant role in its economy.
