US soldier Travis King, who escaped to North Korea in July, has been taken into American custody after being expelled from Pyongyang. The 23-year-old reconnaissance specialist crossed illegally into North Korea, with the North Korean media claiming he fled due to mistreatment and racism within the US military. His exact condition and the specifics of his time in confinement in North Korea remain uncertain. North Korea's state-run news agency announced that they had decided to "deport" Mr. King without providing additional information. Prior to his arrival in North Korea, Private King had spent two months detained in South Korea for assault charges before being released. Although he was supposed to return to the US for disciplinary action, he managed to escape the airport and join a tour of the heavily guarded Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) before fleeing to North Korea. It is unclear if he will face further charges for entering the country. The US Department of State, White House, and defense department have yet to comment on the situation. According to a spokesperson for the King family, no substantial comments are expected at this time. The family previously shared that Travis had faced discrimination while serving in the military and had experienced mental health challenges during his time in South Korean custody. More details about this developing story will be released soon.
