James May, former presenter of Top Gear, believes that the show's format needs to be reconsidered following the BBC's decision to pause the series. The decision to pause production came after host Freddie Flintoff suffered a serious injury while filming last year. May, who presented the show alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, expressed the need for a new approach to the show. He stated in an interview with the BBC's Today Podcast that the format of the show needs a rethink, as the subject of cars has not been as interesting since their invention. May's interview was aired on Radio 4's Today programme and will be featured on the Today podcast. May also addressed suggestions that he, Hammond, and Clarkson could return to the series, expressing his irritation and stating that it would be insensitive considering Flintoff's serious injury. The BBC recently announced the decision to rest the show, although it remains committed to Flintoff, Chris Harris, and Paddy McGuinness, who have been instrumental in the show's success. May, Hammond, and Clarkson pioneered the Top Gear format, which involved car reviews, celebrity guests, and other features. May's own career has taken him to hosting travel and cookery programmes for Amazon in addition to his involvement in The Grand Tour alongside Hammond and Clarkson.
