The European Union has announced stricter regulations for three major pornography websites - Pornhub, Xvideos, and Stripchat. These sites will be required to enhance their content moderation and strengthen age verification for users. The decision was made because these platforms have been found to have at least 45 million monthly users in EU countries, making them Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Union's Digital Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, applauded the designation, stating that it will lead to increased scrutiny and accountability of the sites' algorithms and processes. Creating a safer online environment for children is a priority for the EU, according to Vestager. The EU Commission will be responsible for ensuring that the websites fulfill the new legal requirements, and they have the authority to impose fines of up to 6% of the platforms' global revenue if they fail to comply. Previously, 19 tech giants, including Facebook, Google, and YouTube, were informed that the DSA rules also applied to them. Another social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), has recently been accused by the EU of breaching its obligation to combat disinformation under the DSA, marking the first enforcement proceedings under the legislation.
