The Somerset Family's Journey to Australia, Embarking on an Adventure without Flying

A British family has made it to Indonesia on their journey to Australia without using airplanes. Shannon Coggins, Theo Simon, and their daughter Rosa began their 10,000-mile trip from East Pennard to Sydney on August 16. The family made the decision to stop flying in 2002 due to environmental concerns. They are aiming to reach Australia in time for Shannon Coggins' sister's wedding on December 28. So far, they have traveled through Kazakhstan, China, Laos, Thailand, and Indonesia, and are currently in Dili, the capital of East Timor, hoping to find a boat to cross the Timor Sea to Darwin. From there, they plan to take a bus to Sydney. The journey has required extensive saving and sacrifice, as Shannon Coggins left her job as an administrator and Theo Simon finished working at a natural products company. They have also had to decline bookings for their music band, Seize The Day. Despite the challenges, the family is committed to reducing their carbon footprint and raising awareness about climate change. While they acknowledge that it may not be feasible for everyone, they hope their low-carbon journey serves as an inspiration. The family is optimistic about finding a boat to continue their adventure and make it to Australia for the wedding.
