On his wedding day, a Thai para-athlete and former soldier named Chaturong Suksuk tragically shot his bride, Kanchana Pachunthuek, as well as three other individuals before taking his own life. The incident occurred in northeast Thailand, where the couple had just gotten married. Reports indicate that Chaturong abruptly left the wedding party and returned with a gun, firing shots at his wife, her 62-year-old mother, and 38-year-old sister. Two guests were also injured by stray bullets and rushed to the hospital, with one of them later dying. Authorities have revealed that Chaturong was heavily intoxicated at the time, but his motive remains unclear. They confirmed that he legally purchased the gun and ammunition last year. Thai media reports suggest that an argument occurred between the couple during the celebration, and Chaturong may have felt insecure about the age difference between him and Kanchana. However, police have categorized this as mere speculation and are currently gathering evidence to bring the case to a close. Prior to their marriage, Chaturong and Kanchana had lived together for three years. Chaturong was a decorated athlete who had won a silver medal in swimming at the Asean Para Games in Indonesia. He was also scheduled to compete in the World Abilitysport Games in Thailand the following month. Chaturong had lost his right leg while serving in the paramilitary light infantry force responsible for patrolling Thailand's borders. Although mass shootings are rare in Thailand, the country has a high prevalence of gun ownership. This tragic incident echoes past events, such as the shooting in a luxury mall in Bangkok last month that claimed three lives, and the horrifying gun and knife attack by a former policeman in a nursery in northeastern Thailand last October, which resulted in the deaths of 37 children.
