A baby gorilla was delivered by emergency C-section at a US zoo due to its mother's condition called preeclampsia. The Fort Worth Zoo shared the "historic and emotional" birth of Jameela on its Facebook page. Jameela was born prematurely, with the help of medical experts, making her the first gorilla to be born via C-section in the zoo's 115-year history. The mother, 33-year-old Sekani, is a western lowland gorilla and it was her fourth pregnancy. Zoo veterinarians noticed signs of preeclampsia, a serious blood-pressure condition, and after consulting with an obstetrician, they determined that a C-section was necessary to save both the mother and the baby. Sekani has now fully recovered, but she has not yet bonded with the baby. Zoo experts suspect that the lack of hormonal cues due to the unnatural birth may be the reason. The focus has now shifted to training another gorilla, 24-year-old Gracie, to become a surrogate mother to Jameela, who is said to be thriving.
