The Council of Fashion Designers of America has declared Serena Williams a fashion icon. She was presented with the award at a ceremony in New York on Monday. Williams, a renowned tennis player with 23 Grand Slam singles titles, expressed her love for fashion and revealed that she viewed tennis courts as her runway. This makes her the first athlete to receive the prestigious fashion icon award, which has previously been given to Beyoncé, Zendaya, and Rihanna. During her acceptance speech, Williams reminisced about her experimentation with fashion, including wearing denim skirts, purple tutus, and beads in her hair. She also mentioned her fashion studies during her tennis career and her clothing line, S by Serena, which she launched in 2018. In 2019, Williams described her brand as representing determined women from all walks of life. Despite retiring from her professional tennis career in 2022, Williams has not ruled out a comeback, claiming that the chances are high. In a Vogue magazine article, she referred to her departure from tennis as an evolution. Williams concluded her acceptance speech by expressing gratitude to her mother, attributing her creativity to her mother's sewing skills.
