Foxconn founder Terry Gou has surprised many by choosing actress Tammy Lai as his running mate in the Taiwan presidential election. This decision is unexpected given that Ms Lai has no political experience. Gou, who failed to secure the nomination from the main opposition party, Kuomintang, is running as an independent candidate. Taiwan has been a democracy since 1996, but China still considers it as its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve unification. As a candidate considered to be pro-China, Gou's ratings have been falling behind other candidates such as William Lai of the Democratic Progressive Party, Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People's Party, and Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang in various polls. Ms Lai, 60, has been in the show business industry for many years and gained prominence through her role in the Netflix series Wave Makers, where she played a character inspired by President Tsai Ing-wen. This show earlier this year sparked a Me Too movement in Taiwan. However, there have been speculations about Ms Lai's nationality as Taiwan laws prohibit presidential candidates with dual nationalities. A spokesperson mentioned that Ms Lai will address this question herself at a later time. It is worth noting that Ms Lai's father is a US veteran who was deployed to Taiwan. Nevertheless, he had left the island before she was born, according to a local magazine Business Today. Despite her lack of political experience, Ms Lai believes she can cooperate with Gou due to his interesting personality. Gou, who started Foxconn in 1974, has been appealing to voters with his business success and experience in working with China. Foxconn has become a major supplier for Apple. While some think that Tammy Lai's popularity among young people, thanks to her performance in Wave Makers, might be beneficial for Gou's campaign, Dennis Weng, an associate professor at Sam Houston State University in the US, believes otherwise. He suggests that although Tammy Lai has garnered a following among the youth, they do not support Terry Gou as a candidate.
