Renowned DJ Steve Wright, celebrated for his work on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 for over 40 years, has sadly passed away at the age of 69. His family released a statement expressing their deep sorrow and regret over his death. Wright joined the BBC in the 1970s and became known for hosting the afternoon shows on both Radio 1 and Radio 2. He also presented popular television programmes, including Top of the Pops. His last appearance on air was a pre-recorded Valentine's Day edition of his Love Songs programme. Wright's family, including his son, daughter, brother, and father, as well as his close friends, colleagues, and devoted radio listeners, shared their grief and requested privacy during this difficult time. Radio 2 presenter Sara Cox paid tribute to Wright's wit, warmth, and kind-heartedness, emphasizing his significant role within the Radio 2 family. BBC director general Tim Davie praised Wright as an extraordinary broadcaster who passionately connected with his listeners and brought joy to their lives. Davie also mentioned Wright's recent recognition in the New Year Honours list with an MBE for his services to radio. Wright's career at the BBC started in the 1970s as a clerk before he began broadcasting on Thames Valley Radio in 1976. He then joined BBC Radio 1 in 1980, where his Afternoon show propelled him to success. He briefly hosted the Radio 1 breakfast show before leaving for Talk Radio, only to return to the BBC in 1996. From then on, Wright presented various shows on Radio 2 until 2022. Although he passed his afternoon slot to Scott Mills during schedule changes, Wright remained with Radio 2, continuing to host Sunday Love Songs, as well as participating in specials and podcasts. Radio 2 intends to honor Wright's life through dedicated programming. Further updates on this breaking news story will be provided in due course.
