In Spain, eight individuals have been arrested following the deaths of two officers during a boat chase with suspected drug traffickers. Miguel Angel Gomez Gonzalez, 39, and David Perez Carracedo, 43, lost their lives when a speedboat rammed into their smaller police vessel. The incident occurred in the port of Barbate, near Cadiz, and two other officers were also injured, one seriously. The town's mayor had requested assistance from the Civil Guard after residents reported the presence of six "narco-boats" seeking shelter from a storm in the city's port. A video shared on social media shows onlookers seemingly cheering for the traffickers as their boat collides with the police vessel. The local community has been deeply shaken by the incident, leading to calls for increased police powers in combatting drug trafficking. Among the eight arrested are reputed drug dealers and money launderers. At their court appearance, they were heckled by spectators who shouted "murderers" and "rot in jail." The funerals of the two officers were attended by more than a thousand people. The Spanish Guardia Civil officers' association has demanded better resources and means for officers to fight drug traffickers, calling for the resignation of Spain's interior minister. The minister has promised "zero impunity" in efforts to stop drug trafficking. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also expressed his condolences for the officers' deaths and praised the work of security forces in combating drug trafficking. Cadiz and the surrounding region serve as critical points of entry for drug smugglers, with the nearby Strait of Gibraltar being a favored route.
