South Korean authorities are facing a challenge in trying to control the spread of bedbugs, causing concern throughout the country. So far, there have been 17 reported outbreaks in Seoul, Busan, and Incheon. The government in Seoul has allocated 500 million won ($383,000) to address this issue and has set up a special response team. This is not the first time bedbugs have been seen in South Korea, as there were previous reports of infestations in Daegu city and tourist accommodations. As a result, some people have been avoiding public places such as cinemas and public transportation, fearing they may come into contact with bedbugs. Authorities are inspecting public facilities, including hotels and bathhouses, and plan to steam-clean fabric seats on subways regularly. However, there is controversy over the use of certain pesticides, as recent studies have shown them to be ineffective. While bedbugs do not transmit diseases, their bites can cause severe itching and lead to infections or scarring. Additionally, living with an infestation can cause emotional distress and sleep disturbances.
