Separation Caused by Flooding in Sikkim, India: A Heartbreaking Account of a Mother and Child

Shyam Babu Prasad, a resident of Lal Bazar in India's Sikkim state, was sleeping when a massive flood hit his home. The wave, about 15ft high, threw him and his family with great force. He managed to survive by holding onto a ceiling fan, but his wife went missing in the chaos. Despite searching for more than 10 days, he has been unable to find her. This flood was caused by a glacial lake burst, resulting in deadly flash floods that have claimed the lives of at least 70 people and left 76 missing. Among those who lost their lives was Mr. Prasad's sister, whose body was found three days later. The floodwaters also caused a dam on the Teesta river to collapse, leading to even higher water levels. There has been ongoing opposition to the dam by local tribespeople, citing environmental concerns. The Sikkim government, however, claims that the overflowing dams and embankments were due to the heavy rain and is investigating the cause of the glacial lake outburst. Some believe it was a result of a cloudburst, while others attribute it to the failure of moraines or an earthquake. Experts point to global warming as a contributing factor, as it has caused glaciers to melt faster and increase the water levels of Himalayan lakes. The damage caused by the flood is immeasurable for the people of Sikkim. Villagers are clearing debris from their homes and the destruction is particularly evident along the riverbanks and hills. Despite the challenges, volunteers and rescue missions are working tirelessly to provide aid to the affected areas.
