Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the popular 1960s pop group The Shangri-Las, has passed away at the age of 75, according to her record label. Miriam Linna, from Norton Records, described Mary as an icon and hero for generations. The Shangri-Las, consisting of two sets of sisters, originated from Queens, New York. Some of their famous songs include "Remember" and their well-known hit, "Leader of the Pack." The group consisted of Mary and Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss, as well as twins Marguerite and Mary Ann Ganser, who all attended the same New York school. The group gained attention when producer Artie Ripp helped secure their first record deal. They made their first recording in 1963 with "Simon Says," while "Leader of the Pack" was recorded a year later. In 2019, the tragic song about a young girl's love for a boy from a disadvantaged background who dies in a motorcycle accident was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Shangri-Las disbanded in 1968, and Mary later expressed a disagreement with the perception that they were tough. Ronnie Spector, co-founder of the Ronettes, who passed away in January 2022, shared a tribute to Mary, acknowledging their shared spirit as fearless women of the 60s. Mary Weiss took a break from the music industry for many years but made a comeback in 2007 with a solo album titled "Dangerous Game."
