The wife of the late lead singer of The Pogues, Shane MacGowan, expressed her hope that his iconic song, Fairytale of New York, would become the Christmas number one as a tribute to him. Victoria Mary Clarke, during an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today program, stated that she strongly supported the track, which features Kirsty MacColl, reaching the top spot. Fairytale of New York was originally released in 1987 but has never reached number one, only peaking at number two. However, due to streaming, it has consistently made it into the top 10 every Christmas for the past six years. At present, it is climbing the charts and currently sits at number 18. Clarke drew parallels between the tumultuous love story depicted in the song and her own marriage to MacGowan, emphasizing that their relationship faced its own challenges. MacGowan, who battled with drug and alcohol addiction, was diagnosed with encephalitis before passing away at the age of 65. Clarke admitted that she did not fully comprehend the extent of his addiction when they first met, and the constant drinking throughout his life took a toll on his health. Despite these struggles, Clarke cherished their 16-year relationship, highlighting MacGowan's romantic nature and his paradoxical love for both England and Ireland. The interview with Victoria Mary Clarke can be listened to on Radio 4's Today program or on BBC Sounds.
