A former NFL player named Sergio Brown has been accused of murdering his mother, Myrtle Brown, after being taken into custody in California on Tuesday. Sergio Brown had been the subject of a search by authorities since his mother's body was discovered near her home outside of Chicago last month. Police have stated that he will be extradited back to Illinois to face charges of first-degree murder. During his professional football career, Sergio Brown played for four different teams over six years. The police in Maywood, Illinois, located about 12 miles west of Chicago, found Myrtle Brown's body in a creek on September 16th after her family reported her missing. The medical examiner determined that she had sustained multiple injuries from an assault, leading to her death being ruled as a homicide. While on the run, Sergio Brown, who is now 35 years old, posted videos and messages online from Mexico that were often incoherent. In these videos, he claimed the reports of his mother's murder were "fake news" and insisted she was on vacation in Mexico at the time. He also accused the FBI and Maywood Police Department of involvement in the incident. However, he was ultimately deported back to the US and arrested by the police in San Diego. The family of Myrtle Brown released a statement expressing relief at Sergio Brown's capture and safe return to the United States. Sergio Brown has been charged with first-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. Born in Maywood, Sergio Brown attended a local high school before going on to Notre Dame University. He started his NFL career in 2010 with the New England Patriots as a safety and later played for the Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville Jaguars before leaving the league in 2016.
