US Senator Mitt Romney has called for both Donald Trump and Joe Biden to step aside and make way for a new generation of politicians. During a media interview about his decision to retire from politics, Romney stated that it was time for a fresh group of leaders. Romney, who has had a 20-year political career including a term as governor of Massachusetts, has become a vocal critic of both Biden and Trump in recent years. Although he will remain in office until January 2025, he announced his choice not to run again in a video posted on social media, citing age as a factor in his decision. Romney expressed his intention to encourage young people to join the Republican party, run for office, and vote, believing that both parties would benefit from having candidates from younger generations. In response to a question, Romney also suggested that it would be beneficial for both Biden and Trump to make way for someone from the next generation. Romney emphasized his differences with some Republican colleagues, stating that he represents a smaller and wiser part of the party that focuses on policy goals, while others are more concerned with settling perceived grievances. Romney previously ran for president in 2012 and served as Massachusetts' governor from 2003 to 2007. He made headlines in 2020 and 2021 for voting to convict Trump twice during his impeachment trials. With Romney stepping down, it is likely that his senate seat will go to one of several Trump-supporting candidates.
