The Los Angeles Innocence Project is assisting Scott Peterson in his case, as he was convicted in 2004 for the murder of his pregnant wife. This non-profit organization is dedicated to helping those who have been wrongfully accused and is now looking to gather new evidence from the original trial. In court filings, they have stated that they are currently investigating Peterson's claim of actual innocence. The incident took place 22 years ago when Laci Peterson, who was eight months pregnant, went missing on Christmas Eve. Peterson's lawyer, Pat Harris, expressed his enthusiasm for the support of the highly skilled attorneys from the LA Innocence Project, hoping that they will be able to prove his client's innocence. Last April, Peterson's legal team filed a petition alleging juror misconduct during the murder trial and claimed that new evidence would support their client's innocence, as indicated in court filings on Wednesday. According to prosecutors, Peterson murdered his wife and disposed of her body in the Pacific Ocean, making it seem like she had gone missing. However, her body was discovered four months later when it washed ashore. At the trial, Peterson's defense argued that his wife was killed by a burglar. Nevertheless, he was found guilty by the jury and received a death sentence the following year. In 2020, the California Supreme Court overturned his death sentence after determining that the judge in the original trial had improperly dismissed several jurors. Peterson was subsequently resentenced to life in prison without parole in the following year.
