A 34-year-old man in Rwanda has admitted to committing several crimes, including the murder of 12 women and two men, in a shocking case that has sent shockwaves through the country. Denis Kazungu allegedly buried his victims in his kitchen, a horrifying discovery made by the police after he was forced to vacate his rented home in Kicukiro, a suburb of the capital, Kigali. During a packed courtroom hearing, a woman emotionally called out for her child, whom she claimed had fallen victim to Kazungu. The purpose of the hearing was to determine whether Kazungu should be kept in custody, and the judge is expected to deliver a decision on September 26th. Kazungu, who did not have legal representation, appeared calm and composed during the hearing. When asked for his plea, he firmly answered, "guilty." In an attempt to justify his heinous acts, Kazungu alleged that his victims had deliberately infected him with AIDS, although he provided no evidence to support this claim. The state of Kazungu's mental health remains uncertain, but he seemed rational when he requested that the proceedings be held in private - a request that was denied by the court. "I have committed extreme crimes and do not want my story reported in the media," he stated. Kazungu was arrested after his landlord reported him to the police for failing to pay seven months' worth of rent. According to a police official, he put up a fight during the eviction process, apologizing excessively and crying, which raised suspicions. "We detained him, and during his time at the police station, he confessed to killing several people," said the official. This led to an investigation by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), which revealed that Kazungu had lured his victims, many of whom were sex workers, to his home. There, he would rob and strangle them before burying their bodies in a hole he had dug in his kitchen. The identities of all the victims involved in Kazungu's alleged crimes have yet to be disclosed by the investigators.
