The Oxford Word of the Year for 2023 is "rizz," which has become a popular internet slang term among young people to describe romantic appeal or charm. The word was chosen from a shortlist of eight words that reflect the mood and preoccupations of 2023. Oxford lexicographers made the final decision after a public vote narrowed down the list. Other contenders included words like "Swiftie," "beige flag," and "situationship." The term "rizz" may not be familiar to everyone, particularly those who are not part of Generation Z. However, it has gained massive popularity online, with billions of views of the hashtag on TikTok. Oxford University Press defines "rizz" as style, charm, or attractiveness, as well as the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner. The word is believed to be derived from "charisma" and can also be used as a verb, such as in the phrase "to rizz up," which means to attract, seduce, or flirt with someone. The concept of "rizz" is similar to the older term "game," which refers to the skill and charm needed to attract others sexually. YouTuber and Twitch streamer Kai Cenat is credited with popularizing the term, using it with his friends. The word's usage has continued to grow, and even actor Tom Holland mentioned it when asked about his romantic success. Last year's Oxford Word of the Year was "goblin mode," which describes behavior characterized by self-indulgence and laziness. Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl noted the contrast between "goblin mode" and "rizz," suggesting that the latter reflects a prevailing mood in 2023 where people are opening themselves up and gaining confidence after challenging times. Grathwohl also highlighted the increasing integration of internet culture into everyday language, with words like "rizz" becoming part of the day-to-day vernacular. The shortlist of words was chosen by language experts at Oxford University Press, and a public vote was conducted to select the final word. Meanwhile, Collins Dictionary chose "artificial intelligence" as their word of 2023.
