Home Secretary Suella Braverman's criticism of the Metropolitan Police's handling of pro-Palestinian protests has sparked a heated debate. Braverman accused the force of applying a "double standard" to protests in an article she wrote for The Times. She claimed that right-wing protesters are confronted firmly, while "pro-Palestinian mobs" are largely ignored. The Metropolitan Police has stated that it has no grounds to ban a pro-Palestinian march planned for Armistice Day. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak summoned the force's chief to Downing Street and warned that they would be held accountable if there was trouble on Saturday. Braverman's article has faced backlash from former police officers and MPs, with some urging for her removal from the post of home secretary. However, her allies within the party have supported her, arguing that the pro-Palestinian march should not have been permitted. Protests in London have been ongoing since October following an attack by Hamas on Israel, resulting in a significant number of casualties. The police force has been under pressure to prevent the pro-Palestinian march from taking place, but the Met Commissioner has emphasized that only the threat of serious disorder would warrant its cancellation. The row between the government and the police seemed to be calming down, but Braverman's article has intensified the situation. Many of her colleagues agree with her perspective but are frustrated with having to defend or distance themselves from her comments. Various politicians, including Labour's Yvette Cooper and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, have condemned Braverman's article and called for her dismissal. Former Met chief superintendent Dal Babu warned that her remarks could create substantial problems and challenges for the police. Braverman's comments comparing the marches to events in Northern Ireland were described as offensive and ignorant by a Conservative Party source. She also questioned the disparate treatment of lockdown objectors and Black Lives Matter protesters. Some believe that Braverman is deliberately attempting to get fired to gain a platform of martyrdom on the right-wing.
