In what is believed to be the largest seizure of counterfeit goods in US history, authorities in New York have confiscated more than $1bn worth of fake products. The haul includes approximately 219,000 counterfeit handbags, shoes, and other luxury items. Two men have been charged in connection with the trafficking of these goods, which were stored in a locker in Manhattan. If convicted, the defendants could face up to 10 years in prison. The police commissioner has emphasized that counterfeiting is not a victimless crime, as it harms legitimate businesses, governments, and consumers. The US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York arrested Adama Sow and Abdulai Jalloh, who are accused of running large-scale counterfeit goods trafficking operations from January 2023 until late October. Photos released by authorities depict rooms filled with knock-off luxury bags, wallets, and sunglasses, with an estimated retail value of around $1.03bn. However, it is important to note that the street value of counterfeit goods is usually much lower than the suggested retail price. Law enforcement seized over 83,000 counterfeit items worth over $502m from the premises controlled by Mr. Sow, and more than 50,000 counterfeit items worth over $237m from Mr. Jalloh's premises. In a separate incident, the NYPD seized $35m worth of counterfeit goods and arrested 18 individuals in September. Counterfeit goods sellers have been widely prevalent in Lower Manhattan, particularly along Canal Street, for many years.
