The sexual assault trial of former fashion mogul Peter Nygard has begun in an Ontario court. Prosecutors argued that Nygard, 82, used his power and status to assault five women between the late 1980s and 2005. They claimed that Nygard lured the women, aged 16 to 28 at the time, into a private bedroom in his company's Toronto headquarters. Nygard denies all the charges and pleaded not guilty to five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. The Crown attorney accused Nygard of using his wealth and fashion designer status to attract and assault young women. The trial, which is expected to last at least six weeks, will include testimony from all five women involved. Nygard also faces other sex-related charges in Manitoba, Quebec, and the US. He is set to be extradited to the US once his Canadian trials are completed. Nygard, once worth $700 million, founded Nygard International and turned it into a global apparel empire before stepping down as chairman in 2020. He has been in prison since his arrest in December of that year.
