Peter Navarro, a former senior trade adviser to Donald Trump, has been sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress. Navarro, who was convicted in September, ignored a subpoena from a House committee investigating allegations of election tampering. Federal prosecutors argued that Navarro prioritized allegiance to Trump over the rule of law and deserved a severe punishment. He had been facing up to one year in prison for each of the two misdemeanor contempt charges. Navarro's lawyers have appealed the conviction and argued that he should serve no more than six months of probation. In his book, Navarro claimed to be the architect of a strategy to challenge the 2020 election results. The House committee called his claims baseless, and the judge ruled that Navarro could not cite executive privilege to ignore the committee's summons. Navarro's case bears similarities to Steve Bannon's, another Trump aide who was convicted of defying a legal summons from the House committee on January 6. Bannon received a four-month jail sentence but remains free pending appeal.
