Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has called for changes to OpenAI's board following the unexpected firing of Sam Altman. In an interview with CNBC, Nadella emphasized the need for governance reform at the company, without specifying the details or ruling out Microsoft's potential presence on the board. Microsoft is currently OpenAI's largest investor and has also recruited Altman to head a new artificial intelligence team. However, these strong ties do not extend to the boardroom. OpenAI has recently been plagued by internal turmoil, with staff openly revolting against Altman's removal. A letter signed by the majority of OpenAI's employees demands Altman's reinstatement and the resignation of the board. The situation became even more complicated when Altman appeared to be returning to OpenAI before being hired by Microsoft. Though uncertain, Nadella stated that Altman's future involvement depends on OpenAI staff members remaining or joining Microsoft. Meanwhile, interim CEO Emmett Shear, former head of Twitch, has been thrust into the midst of the controversy. Shear and Altman have a history together, having been involved with start-up investment program Y Combinator. However, some of Shear's tweets critical of Microsoft have garnered attention online. Neither Shear nor OpenAI has responded to media inquiries.
