A Nigerian actress named Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin has been sentenced to six months in prison for tampering with currency. Last year, a video surfaced online showing her throwing and stepping on newly issued naira notes at a party in Lagos. Additionally, she was seen flaunting large amounts of money that had recently been redesigned. Initially pleading not guilty, the actress later admitted her guilt. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stated that Omoseyin appeared in court last Thursday and pleaded guilty due to overwhelming evidence. Her lawyer pleaded for leniency, explaining that she was a first-time offender and a mother. Omoseyin, also known as Simi Gold, requested a non-custodial sentence. However, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke sentenced her to six months in prison or the option to pay a $250 fine. It remains unclear if she will appeal the court's ruling. This event occurred during a time of severe scarcity of naira cash, following the withdrawal of old 200, 500, and 1,000 naira notes from circulation.
