North Korea has fired over 200 rounds of artillery shells towards South Korea's Yeonpyeong island, according to the military in Seoul. Following the attack, South Korea issued an evacuation warning to civilians on the island but did not confirm if it was connected to the attack. South Korea has condemned the incident, labeling it a "provocative act." In 2010, North Korean artillery fired on Yeonpyeong island, resulting in the deaths of four people. Fortunately, the shells fired during this recent incident did not enter South Korean territory but landed in the buffer zone between the two countries. Although there was no damage to the people or military, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff emphasized that the act threatened peace and raised tensions on the Korean peninsula. This incident comes after North Korea suspended a military deal with the South several months ago and expressed intentions to deploy more powerful armed forces and military hardware in the border region. North Korea has repeatedly violated the pact in recent years by launching missiles and firing artillery into the sea towards the South. Yeonpyeong island, located near the disputed maritime border in the Yellow Sea, has been a site of naval clashes between North and South Korea over the years.
