A historic synagogue in New York has been ordered to evacuate due to a secret tunnel discovered underneath it that has destabilized the structure. The tunnel, which was found to be 60ft long, was not properly reinforced. Upon the arrival of a cement truck to fill the tunnel, a fight broke out between police and community members involved in the construction, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals. In response, the city issued an emergency order to stabilize the sanctuary. The city's Department of Buildings stated they would continue monitoring the stabilization work and warned that further actions may be necessary. Concerns were raised about potential damage caused by the tunnel to the famous Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters. The building, formerly the home of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, is a significant Jewish site in the city and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The exact motive behind the tunnel's construction remains unclear, although a spokesperson for the Chabad attributed it to a "group of extremist students." The chairman of the Chabad expressed gratitude to the police for their efforts and denounced the actions of the individuals involved as vandalism. Some reports suggest that overcrowding at the synagogue may have led to the decision to build the tunnel in order to expedite expansion efforts.
