Donald Trump is facing a fraud trial in New York, where his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified that Trump inflated the value of his properties on financial statements. Cohen revealed that he and Allen Weisselberg, former finance chief of the Trump Organization, manipulated the assets' values to meet Trump's desired goals. Cohen also claimed that Trump attempted to use inflated financial documents in a failed 2014 bid to purchase the Buffalo Bills. Trump, who is attending the trial voluntarily, dismissed Cohen as a credible witness. Cohen, who was sentenced to jail in 2018 for lying to Congress and making hush payments on Trump's behalf, stated that the trial was about accountability. This marks the first time Trump and Cohen have been in the same room in five years. The fraud investigation, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, was sparked by Cohen's 2019 testimony to Congress. The judge has ruled that Trump committed fraud and fined him for violating a gag order. Although Trump does not face the risk of imprisonment in this civil trial, the judge has warned him against future violations. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing and previously sued Cohen, with plans to refile the lawsuit at a later date.
