Several days after Hurricane Otis struck the Mexican resort of Acapulco, dozens of people are still missing. The governor of Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located, reported that 45 bodies have been recovered, but at least 47 individuals remain unaccounted for. Acapulco has been severely devastated by the hurricane, which initially hit as a powerful category 5 storm before weakening. The slow delivery of aid has caused frustration among locals, leading to incidents of looting. One resident expressed her desperation, explaining the lack of water and extensive damage to her home. The government has dispatched soldiers and police to assist in the area, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promised to help rebuild Acapulco. However, a group representing retailers has called for increased security measures to prevent further looting. They emphasized the need to ensure that essential supplies like food, medicine, and hygiene products reach the intended recipients. Governor Evelyn Salgado noted that debris has been cleared from many blocked roads, facilitating the delivery of food. Additionally, electricity has been restored to approximately two-thirds of the city by the federal electricity commission. The rapid intensification of Hurricane Otis caught forecasters and residents off guard, leaving many unprepared for its impact.
