Reports from local media in Mexico's southern Guerrero state indicate that 11 police officers and a security chief have lost their lives in a violent incident. The incident occurred when a security patrol was unexpectedly attacked by unidentified gunmen in the Coyuca de Benitez municipality, located west of the popular Pacific resort of Acapulco. Shockingly, some of the victims were reportedly handcuffed before being mercilessly shot by the assailants, as reported by El Universal newspaper. The state of Guerrero has been gravely affected by drug-related violence, with multiple groups vying for control over highly lucrative drug routes along the Pacific corridor. This area is renowned for opium poppy cultivation and heroin production. Tragic incidents, such as the assassination of a town mayor by armed individuals last year, are not uncommon in Guerrero. Authorities attributed that particular attack to a criminal organization affiliated with a drug cartel.
