Amalija Knavs and her husband, Viktor, became American citizens in 2018 after being sponsored by their daughter's green cards. This process, which Donald Trump had criticized as "chain migration," allowed them to reunite with their family in the United States. Before relocating to the US, Amalija worked at a textile factory in Slovenia, while Viktor worked as a car salesman. Melania, who attended high school in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, met Donald Trump while working as a model in 1998. They later had a son named Barron in 2006, the same year she became a US citizen.
