A man in the US has admitted to stealing a pair of ruby red slippers worn by Judy Garland's character Dorothy in the film The Wizard of Oz. Terry Jon Martin initially believed the shoes were made of real gems until a stolen goods buyer informed him that they were actually made of glass. Martin, who is now 76 and in poor health, had taken the slippers from a museum in Minnesota in 2005. There are only four authentic pairs remaining from the film, and they were being loaned to the museum at the time of the theft. Martin, who has a previous conviction for receiving stolen goods, is currently free on bail until his sentencing, for which no date has been set. Prosecutors have said that the slippers are now valued at around $3.5m.
