According to Yonhap news agency, the leader of South Korea's political opposition, Lee Jae-myung, was attacked and stabbed during a news conference held in the city of Busan. Lee, who narrowly lost the presidential elections in 2022, suffered a stab wound on the left side of his neck on Tuesday morning. The assailant, a male, was immediately apprehended by authorities at the scene. Lee was promptly transported to a nearby hospital approximately 20 minutes after the incident occurred. At the time of transfer, he remained conscious. Although not currently a member of South Korea's legislature, Lee is expected to run for a seat in the next general election scheduled for April 2024. The previous presidential race, in which Lee participated, resulted in his defeat with a mere 0.73% difference in votes compared to the current President, Yoon Suk-yeol. It is regarded as the closest presidential election in South Korean history. Additional details concerning this developing news story will be released shortly.
