Local media reports indicate that the leader of a notorious faction of the Gulf Cartel in Mexico has been apprehended. José Alberto García Vilano, also known as La Kena or Ciclon 19, is said to be heading the violent Los Ciclones cell. Vilano's group stands accused of abducting four US citizens in March of last year, resulting in the death of two individuals. According to officials, Vilano was captured in a shopping plaza in Monterrey after his whereabouts were leaked. Video footage circulating on social media purportedly shows Vilano and his associates being escorted through a mall by armed police. The four kidnapped Americans had traveled to Matamoros, a border city neighboring Brownsville, Texas, for cosmetic surgery - a common practice for Americans seeking affordable medical procedures in Mexico. Armed men were seen loading the victims into a pickup truck, with some appearing unconscious and being dragged. The ordeal lasted four days, ultimately claiming the lives of two US citizens and an innocent Mexican bystander. While the motive for the attack remains unconfirmed, Mexican authorities are exploring the possibility that the group was mistaken for rival cartel members. Following the incident, the Scorpions Group, another splinter cell of the Gulf Cartel, reportedly apologized for the kidnapping and turned over five individuals deemed responsible. A reward for Vilano's capture had been offered by the state government of Tamaulipas since 2022, and there are also reports of his being wanted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
