During the state visit of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, members of the popular South Korean girl group Blackpink were honored with honorary MBEs by King Charles. The King praised the global influence of Korean pop culture and specifically mentioned Blackpink's support for environmental causes. He commended their ability to prioritize important issues while being global superstars. The honorary MBEs were given to recognize the group's role as ambassadors for the COP climate change summit and their advocacy for the UN's sustainable development goals. This recognition reflects the increasing importance of South Korea as a strategic ally and economic partner. The members of Blackpink, Roseanne Park, Jennie Kim, Jisoo Kim, and Lalisa Manoban, attended a state banquet at Buckingham Palace as part of the state visit. The King's speech also highlighted the ability of South Korean popular culture to captivate imaginations. As a surprise, the military band played the famous song "Gangnam Style" during the changing of the guard ceremony. The state visit aims to strengthen trade links and military partnerships between the UK and South Korea, with a focus on technology and green energy. Plans for joint sea patrols with the aim of enforcing sanctions against North Korea and preventing its illegal weapons program are also underway. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the importance of long-term global partnerships for prosperity and security.
