Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer, although the specific type has not been revealed. The cancer was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate, but it is not prostate cancer. The King has started "regular treatments" and remains optimistic about his recovery, according to a statement from the palace. As a result, he will be postponing his public engagements and other senior royals are expected to fill in for him. Details about the stage of the cancer or a prognosis have not been shared. Despite his health condition, the King will continue his constitutional role as head of state, including paperwork and private meetings. In case he is unable to carry out official duties, counsellors of state such as Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward can be appointed as stand-ins. Prince Harry and Prince Andrew, who are no longer working royals, will not be called upon. Prince William, who temporarily withdrew from public engagements to support his wife's recovery from abdominal surgery, will be returning to his duties later this week. The Duke of Sussex has also spoken with the King and will be traveling to the UK to visit him soon. It was reported that the King had raised awareness about prostate checks when he publicly disclosed his own treatment. His decision led to an increase in inquiries about prostate conditions on the NHS website. Age is a significant factor in the development of cancer, with more than a third of new cancer cases in the UK occurring in individuals aged 75 and older. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer have both wished the King a quick and complete recovery.
