Two American men, Jonathan Lehrer and Robert Snider, have been charged with the murder of a Canadian businessman, Daniel Langlois, and his partner, Dominique Merchand, in Dominica. The bodies of Langlois and Marchand were found in a burnt-out vehicle in the Soufriere area of the island after they were reported missing. Lehrer and Snider were charged during a court hearing and are currently in custody awaiting trial. Reports have revealed that Lehrer, a chocolate maker from New Jersey, owned a 53-acre property next to a luxury eco-resort owned by the couple, and a dispute over the use of a public road had arisen. Langlois had filed a legal action against Lehrer, claiming that his actions had interfered with the resort and his livelihood. In 2019, a High Court judge ruled in favor of Langlois, ordering Lehrer to open up the road to public use and grant unrestricted access to guests. Both Langlois and Lehrer were successful businessmen, operating projects that benefited their employees and the surrounding areas. Lehrer's father, Robert, has stated that he believes his son is innocent and that his legal dispute with Langlois had troubled him. Langlois was a notable figure in the technology and film industry, having founded the animation software firm, Softimage, which was later acquired by Microsoft. He and Marchand also launched the Resilient Dominica Project, aimed at assisting the island after Hurricane Maria caused significant damage. Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge paid tribute to Langlois, calling him a visionary in digital technologies and cinema.
