A 69-year-old Jewish man, Paul Kessler, has died following a clash between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrators in California. Witnesses reported that Kessler was involved in a dispute with counter-protesters, during which he fell backwards and hit his head on the ground. He passed away in hospital on Monday. The county medical examiner determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma, ruling it a homicide. Authorities are considering the incident as an isolated case but have not ruled out the possibility of it being a hate crime. The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles stated that Kessler was struck by a megaphone wielded by a pro-Palestinian protester, but police have not confirmed this. Rabbi Michael Barclay of Temple Ner Simcha, located near the altercation, has called for calm and urged the community to wait for the police investigation to conclude. Hussam Ayloush, the executive director of the Los Angeles Council on American-Islamic Relations, expressed his condolences and called for people to avoid jumping to conclusions or spreading rumors that could escalate tensions. Kessler's death comes at a time of heightened tension in the United States due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Authorities have reported an increase in threats and hate crimes against Jewish and Muslim individuals. The FBI director has warned of an elevated terror threat to Americans since the war began. Israeli lawmakers Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid also commented on the incident, highlighting it as a warning sign of the rise of antisemitism. The incident occurred in Thousand Oaks, California, and police are expected to provide further information about the incident in a press conference on Tuesday. Conflicting witness statements and the lack of a video of the altercation have complicated the investigation, according to Rabbi Barclay's conversation with local police.
